California Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) System

Provisional Instruction Permit (Age 15½+)
To apply for a provisional instruction permit, teens must:
Be at least 15½ years old.
Complete a DMV-approved driver’s education course (such as DMVEdu’s online course).
Pass a written knowledge test and vision test at the DMV.
Restrictions:
Teens must be accompanied by a licensed adult (age 25+) while driving.
The permit must be held for at least 6 months before applying for a provisional license.

Provisional Driver’s License (Age 16+)
To apply for a provisional instruction permit, teens must:

Full Driver’s License (Age 18+)
At age 18, or after holding a provisional license for at least 12 months without violations, teens can obtain a full, unrestricted driver’s license.
The night driving and passenger restrictions are lifted at this stage.
The GDL system helps ensure that young drivers develop their skills gradually in a controlled environment, reducing risks on the road. California’s GDL laws are strictly enforced to enhance road safety for both new drivers and the public.
How Does the California Driver’s Ed Online Course Work?
Our California Driver’s Ed course is simple, flexible, and designed to meet the needs of busy teens. Here’s what you can expect:
Timed, state-approved course
California law requires that driver education include a minimum of 30 hours of instruction. Our program is timed to comply with this requirement, but there’s no maximum time limit to complete it—study at your own pace!
Unit Quizzes and Final Exam
The course is divided into 11 units, each followed by a short quiz.
You must score at least 70% on each quiz to move to the next unit.
Once you finish all units, you’ll take a 30-question final exam, requiring a minimum score of 70% to pass.
Quizzes and the final exam can be retaken as many times as needed.
Certificate of Completion
After passing the final exam, your DMV Certificate of Completion will be mailed to you. This certificate is required to take the written permit test at the DMV.
