16+
Connecticut Learner’s Permit
Teens can apply for a learner’s permit at age 16.
Requirements:
Pass a vision test and written knowledge test at the DMV.
Complete at least 30 hours of classroom or online driver education, including 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor.
Restrictions:
Permit holders must always drive with a licensed adult (age 20+) who has held a license for at least 4 years.

16½ - 18
Connecticut Provisional License
After holding a learner’s permit for at least 120 days (or 180 days without driver education), teens can apply for a provisional license.
Restrictions:
No passengers under age 20, except immediate family, for the first 6 months.
No driving between 11 PM and 5 AM, except for school, work, or emergencies.

AGE
18+
Full Unrestricted License
At age 18, or after holding a provisional license for 1 year without violations, teens can apply for a full driver’s license, with all restrictions lifted.
