Instruction Permit

At age 14, you can apply for an instruction permit after passing a vision and written knowledge test.

While holding this permit, you must drive with a licensed adult (21+) seated in the front seat.

You cannot use wireless communication devices while driving, except in emergencies.

15+

Restricted License

After holding an instruction permit for at least one year and completing a state-approved driver’s education course, you can apply for a restricted license.

You may drive unsupervised between 5 AM and 9 PM to school or work.

You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.

17+

Full Driver’s License

At age 17, you can apply for a full, unrestricted Kansas driver’s license if you’ve held a restricted license for at least 12 months without violations.
