AGE
16+
Limited Instructional Permit
Teens must complete a certified 33-hour driver education course approved by the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) before applying for a limited instructional permit.
Must pass a written knowledge exam at the DMV.
Driving is only allowed when supervised by a licensed adult (age 21+) in the front seat.
Must hold the permit for at least 6 months and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night) before applying for a license.

Limited Provisional License
After completing the supervised driving requirements and holding the permit for 6 months without violations, teens may apply for a limited provisional license.
Nighttime Driving Restriction: No driving between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent/guardian or for school/work purposes with documentation.
Passenger Limitation: For the first 12 months, no more than one passenger under 21 is allowed unless accompanied by a supervising adult or if passengers are household members.
Seat Belt Requirement: The driver and all passengers must wear seat belts at all times.

17½–18
Full Unrestricted License
Teens may apply for a full license at age 17½ if they:
Held the limited provisional license for at least 12 months without any traffic violations.
Have met all supervised driving and education requirements.
Otherwise, the provisional license automatically converts to an unrestricted license at age 18, with all restrictions lifted.
