2025 Driver Education Round 3
A Passenger to a Driver

My dad would drive everyday to Downtown Los Angles to go to work, having to deal with the rough traffic and narrowly getting rear-ended every time he drove. He would have to compensate for other peoples mistakes to ensure that he would get to his office safely. This shouldn't be the case, but it has to be. Many people take driving as sort of a toy, driving carelessly and recklessly. They don't think about the very real consequences that can come with it. This is one take away from my dads driving that I think about, because you never know what will happen, until it eventually does.
My mom can drive in any weather and any condition. This may sound like an exaggeration, but its true. She grew up in the desert, where snow and rain was very prominent. She even spent time up in the mountains, where she had to deal with many of close calls, but still she stayed calm. Growing up surrounded by many tough driving experiences made her the safe driver she is today, but even then, she still gets scared on the road. Just this past month, very heavy rain came though Southern California and there were nights where even she was terrified to drive. She had to drive my brother to a musical practice all the way in Duarte, which is about 25 miles away, and I can with as well. At this point, the roads were very wet and the rain made it super hard to see the road lines, so I helped guide my mom in the passenger seat to ensure that we would be safe. As we were driving, many cars and trucks passed up very quickly, seemingly careless of how fast they were going in the unsafe conditions. Thankfully, we did not witness any hydro-planing nor did it happen to our car, but that was a very real possibility. The cars that passes us on the freeway were, again, careless with how they were driving. It was a very interesting thing to witness because it made me think about how many people do not take driving as serious as it should be taken.
Now, I am at the age where many high schoolers start to get their license. Teens move from the passenger seat to the drivers seat. I am now a driver, without the safety of my parents driving me, I have to rely on my knowledge and practice to get me from place to place. I had gone through my drivers ed, permit test, practice driving for almost 8 months, to my drivers test, to the road. It is a eye-opening thing to see as a young teen how dangerous driving can be. I have been driving on my own for less than a year, and I can already say that people are just not safe. Whether it is another teen driving, or an experienced adult, everyone makes mistakes that can cause accidents. But, there's a difference when the mistake can cause another life to be taken.
I was told from very young age that there is a possibility everytime when one gets behind a wheel or in a car for that matter, that they could die, and I understand completely what that means. To hear that int he safety of the passenger seat is totally different than hearing that in the drivers seat where the car is your complete control. Everytime I drive, I take those words into consideration and I watch the cars, turn the wheel, indicate my blinker, and merge lanes very carefully and safely. You never know when it is your last drive, so I ensure that I make it as safe as possible to my next destination, so I can be able to tell my kids in the future, that the importance of driving safe all depends on you.
