For me impaired driving means driving while not being your normal self and something being off functionally whether it is tiredness, drugs, alcohol, or distracting passengers. However, the actual definition of impaired driving per the FDOT is defined as driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and/or legal (prescription and over-the-counter) and/or illegal drugs. I feel that impaired may be a misunderstood term when it comes to driving because most people automatically think of either drugs or alcohol, but distractions and fatigue are also considered impairments of people's driving ability. I feel that tiredness and distractions are equally as dangerous as drugs and alcohol but are less condemned and spoken about. Impaired driving is a very broad topic that encompasses many different types of impairment but all are equally as dangerous but maybe not all are equally as common. So essentially impaired driving is driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol, while tired, or while distracted. If I had to guess which types of impairment are most common I would guess distracted is first because of texting while driving, alcohol would be second most common because of how accessible it is, fatigue is third because of how often people are tired and drive anyways because they have to get somewhere, drugs would be fourth because of how rare I would say drugs are more rare to come across for the everyday person compared to the previous three. After doing some research it turns out I was mistaken. The most common impairment is drunk driving which causes 13,000+ deaths per year, second would be drowsy driving which causes 6,000+ deaths per year, third most common would be distracted driving which causes 3,000+ deaths per year, and the only guess I got right is fourth which would be drugged driving which causes 250+ deaths per year. I have heard multiple stories about impaired driving. One instance was drunk driving while the other was drugged driving. These stories showed me how driving under the influence is never worth it. Driving impaired ruins lives and a split second decision of hopping behind the wheel can ruin an entire life by ending up in jail. The different guest speakers my school has had have opened my eyes to the many different impairments like drowsiness and distraction, because at first I only thought of drugs and alcohol as impaired driving. Hearing all of these different stories have opened my eyes to being more aware of my condition when I get behind the wheel. What I heard from these people also influenced who I would get in a car with or who I would let drive me somewhere. These experiences have allowed me to become more observant of my surroundings on the road. I think that after these experiences I notice people being reckless, swerving, or tailgating more often than other people I ride or drive with. If I were to try and change how people feel towards impaired driving I would lean more into drowsy driving and distracted driving. Now while drunk and drugged driving are very dangerous I feel that when speaking to teenagers drowsy and distracted are more prevalent in their daily lives. I say this because most teenagers are staying up late and waking up early which is going to lead to a lot of drowsy drivers on the road. Distracted driving is more prevalent among teenagers because we are always glued to our phones and can’t stand the thought of putting them down for more than 5 minutes even though they are glued to our hips throughout the day. I also feel that most teenagers are also going to day I don’t do drugs or drink so impaired driving doesn’t apply to me because I don’t do that stuff anyways. However, I don’t know how to implement that into a program but I feel that would help get more kids my age to pay more attention. Another thing that is a factor towards kids my age paying attention to these kinds of presentations is that everyone feels too cool for school, so they feel like if you actually pay attention or enjoy a presentation then you’re weird. I think I can play a large role in preventing impaired driving in the lives of people around me because I feel that if people respect you enough they will value your decision making. I would also consider myself well respected among my friends, which is why I think my influence would help keep my friends from driving while drowsy or distracted. Whether that comes down to me taking my friends phone while he is driving or me telling my friends to pull over and let me drive because I notice them nodding them off. I feel it is important to not sound demeaning when doing it. I would make sure they realize that it is coming from a place of love and care.
