Many lives are lost due to road mishaps each year, and many of those accidents could have been avoided with the improvement of driving education, awareness, and practices. Majority of individuals drive each day, however many are unaware of how many more underlying responsibilities come with it. Driving education is not only about learning traffic laws and signs by heart; it's also about developing an attitude that recognizes the dangers of the road and acknowledging that each driver has an obligation to keep themselves and other people safe.
Proper driver education is one of the strongest tools we can have for reducing accidents. When new drivers are taught safe habits early, they are less likely to develop dangerous habits later on. New drivers should acquire safe practices when starting their learning through a structured program before negative habits can develop. It should test and enforce proper reaction time, appropriate following distance, defensive driving, and hazard awareness. Many people learn these abilities by trial and error without receiving official instruction, which can be extremely dangerous. Moreover, a skilled instructor has to help new drivers recognize their flaws and make improvements by providing feedback that friends or parents might not think to offer or even miss. I sometimes find myself rushing to my piano lesson, but then see others speeding and remind myself a few lost minutes of my class is not worth the risk of my life.
Additionally, communities should contribute to taking significant action to lower the number of fatalities caused by driving by enforcing stricter rules for intoxicated and distracted drivers, since those are reasons for major collisions. Schools can raise awareness early by starting clubs that help young people build safe habits even before they get their license. There should also be an improvement on road design like better lighting, safer intersections, and clear signs. On some of my roads, there are markings of temporary road squares that are hard to differentiate another lane from the oncoming traffic’s lane. Moreover, adding new safety features in cars such as automatic braking or lane assist, are helpful, they only work when drivers are paying attention and making responsible choices. However, these devices can only improve safety if drivers are responsible, focused, and well-informed.
One of my close friend’s father was involved in a serious crash while turning into his complex, where a teenager who was driving 160 km/h in a 70 zone collided right into the front of his car. If he turned even a second earlier, the outcome could have been fatal. Thankfully, the only damage was to the vehicle, but this situation showed how one person’s reckless driving decisions can put innocent lives in danger. There was another incident last year, when a graduate from my school died in a motorcycle accident. He had been riding responsibly, but the driver of a nearby vehicle was distracted and unaware of his presence, causing a collision that took his life. He was so young, and the news was heartbreaking for our school’s community. This tragedy reminded me of how fragile lives are and could end with someone else’s simple distractions. These experiences have made me more aware of how quickly a normal drive can turn dangerous, and shaped my understanding of responsibility further that comes with being behind the wheel.
As a new driver, I want to build safe habits from the beginning. One of the biggest things I plan to do is keep my phone completely out of reach so I’m not tempted to look at it. I also want to practice defensive driving by staying aware of what other drivers might do instead of assuming everyone will follow the rules. I sometimes find myself distracted by my surroundings, but remember what can happen with one simple mistake which brings back my full focus to ensure I'm not putting mine and other people’s lives in danger. It’s not just about my own driving, if I see a friend or family member doing something unsafe, I want to feel confident enough to speak up or offer to drive instead.
Ultimately, going through a drivers test isn't just for a license. It’s a long-term commitment to being responsible and keeping people safe. When drivers understand the weight of that responsibility, everyone benefits. With better education, stronger awareness, and responsible choices, we can reduce preventable deaths and create safer roads for everyone. Remember, you shouldn't feel relaxed while driving and always be aware of surroundings. .
