In 2020, over 11,000 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, which accounts for 30% of all traffic-related deaths in the U.S. This increase from the previous year highlights a significant and ongoing issue. In 2024 and early 2025, the states of Montana and South Carolina had the highest rate of impaired driving, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and action. Listening to various stories about impaired driving, I have noticed a common theme: the dangerous effects substances have on the driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely. Impaired driving can affect people's awareness and influences their choices behind the wheel by reducing reaction time, impairing focus, altering your judgment, distoring perception, and increasing overconfidence. The influence theat impaired driving causes goes far beyond just the statistics, but touches the lives of families and friends, including the entire community. Each story not only depicts a tragic loss but also trigger a chain reaction of future incidents. Survivors of accidents often endure long-lasting physical and emotional scars. While the families of victim grapple with the heavy burden of grief, the ey seek justice as they confront the circumstances surrounding their loss. A woman lost  her entire family in a car crash on her family vacation day in Flordia on January 6, 2019. The driver from the incident had an alcohol level that was nearly four times the legal limit. After the accident, she found a technology for vehicles that can stop drunk drivers.  And had been working with Mothers Against Drunk  Driving (MADD), other victims, survivors, and many others to help make sure theat the technology will go through to every new vehicle to help prevent accidents like hers from happening. Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky proposed change due to a 21% increase in drunk driving deaths. This proposal could hinder her efforts to prevent families from suffering trauma related to intoxicated individuals. Later, Congressman Massie had canceled a provision in the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to direct the U.S. Department of Transportation to create a rule for automakers to integrate impaired driving prevention technology into new vehicles, which was named the Honoring Abbas Family Legacy to Terminate Drunk Driving Act, or HALT, in memory of her family. When Congressmen Massie  brought the amendment, this made her upset, outraged, and horrified by his misrepresentation of the technology and the goal to other members of Congress during the hearing. She said the technology would only inconvenience drivers who break the law by being illegally impaired. But it's not a switch for law enforcement of the goverement to control the vehicles. It would be a clear false theory and false narrative that can be disproved by multiple fact checkers, or the car will stop in the middle of the road if it thinks you weren't a great driver. But as a result, every day, the number of drivers has grown who have tested positive for drugs instead of alcohol. And the number of deaths has increased from around 10,000 per year to 13,000. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, impaired during has not yet adopted technology, but could save 10,100 lives per year when it's in full effect. She thought of a solution, which was to pass a law that directed the U.S. Department of Transportation to evaluate, test, and set a rule to implement auto safety technology in vehicles. It will have a similar process to that of seatbelts, airbags, and backup cameras. So despite the imaginable loss she endured, the woman has channeled her grief into a powerful mission. By partnering with organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), she advocates for technology the could prevent future tragedies like hers.Through her efforts, she hopes not just to honor her family's memories but to help save countless lives by raising awareness and pushing for legislation that enforces safety measure in vehicles . Her journey and so many others serve as a reminder that, while we cannot change the past, we can strive for a safer and better future. We must work to ensure that no other families has to endure the pain of losing a loved one. We must respond to the urgent call to take to stop impaired driving seriously to save lives and reduce the number of accidents. It is also essential to educate the public about the dangers and risks associated with both alcohol and drug-impaired driving. This can be achieved through public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and partnerships with community organizations and health professionals.
