Personally, impaired driving means that there are some people who tend to believe that they are able to drive even though they are under the influence of a substance. To add on, I think impaired driving is sometimes misunderstood because everyone has a different mind and their own opinions. Though many may think similarly to what the definition of the word is, others may tend to disagree because of their own personal experience. I believe that personal experiences tend to change a lot of one's opinion about something. Say if someone were to experience driving and being under the influence, they might feel a bit offended if a person wasn’t talking good about impaired driving. It would all just depend on the person’s reaction and experience at the end of the day. Speaking about one's personal experiences, I think the most common types of impairment today are texting and alcohol. Nowadays, everyone has some type of phone with them, and it is truly a distraction. No matter where one may be, people are always looking at their phone for something. Society has changed a lot in communication through the phone as well. With so many apps and notifications popping up on one’s phone, texts are just another thing to distract a driver on the road. Someone may look to see what popped up on their phone and take a quick glance, but that quick glance could cost that driver their life. If someone is unaware of their surroundings on the road for even a split second, many other cars could be doing the same thing at the same time. Without knowing, an accident could happen in an instant. During the Prohibition Era, in the 1900's, there was a high increase in crashes caused by drivers who consumed alcohol. Even to this day, many crashes have happened because of drivers who have consumed alcohol. Within such a long period of time, many things in the world have changed but this issue has yet to stay somehow. One’s driving ability will spin and spin and make them uncapable to drive. Compare it to if someone spins while standing, they most likely can’t even walk in a straight line. With both of those ideas in mind, how would it be possible to drive safely while being under the influence of alcohol? To be clear, I highly believe that alcohol is an impairment that is most common among drivers today. Continuing, I heard a story about one of my distant cousins dying in a car crash. He had heart problems, and he decided to have quite a few drinks with family for a wedding right before he decided to drive home. Knowing that he experienced that and was still so young, it shaped my future choices of driving. I told myself to always be aware and to not be under the influence of something before driving because my safety is what's most important. This definitely influenced me to be more careful about others as well. If I know that they aren't able to drive by themselves, I should make them stay or take responsibility for taking them home. Caring for others has intensified me because I could not imagine losing a loved one like that when they were still so young. Caring for others is important and that connects to how
driver's education and
traffic school courses can help change people. I would say to really help and grab people's attention, driver's education and traffic school courses should have stats or data showing how intense impaired driving can be. Not only that but maybe even have speakers who have experienced that dangerous scene with others to tell their personal story in a course for a day. What makes these programmers effective in real-world situations is giving real-world situations. Giving multiple scenarios and images to those who are learning can help them figure out a situation that could happen. It's way better to be safe than sorry. Now, I think the average person that I am with billions of other people, I can play the role of at least trying to help those that I know to not drive if they're under the influence. I will definitely try my best to keep them from driving or if they insist on going home, at least drive them home. My knowledge or training can influence others to make safer decisions by taking a second thought or even thinking about the terrible possibilities that could happen. Even though there are a lot of times that it seems like a scenario would never be true, it could happen with no thought. I hope I can help people to be safer considering that I'm one person out of billions in the world.
