Impaired Driving: More then just a license

I think the most most common type of impairment while driving is alcohol. When I was first taking the drivers education class, I was aware of impaired driving but didn't make a big deal about it. The most important thing I learned in the whole course was to not drink and drive. The not drinking and driving concept got brought up almost everyday in that course. Alcohol affects driving ability by slowing reaction time, reducing coordination, and diminishing judgement and vision.
I personally began to realizing that driving impaired can be life altering. My friends and I were with one of my college students. The college student was impaired at the time and we decided to drive back to our houses. I was in the car with my friend and my brother was in the other car with the college student. Being in high school and college, we did not think anything was going to happen due to lack of experience driving and being over - confident due to our lack of age and maturity. All of a sudden, we see our friend and my brother drive right past a stop sign and into the ditch. The car hit the ditch going about 40mph. My friend and I got out of our vehicle to assess the situation. The car that they were driving was totaled and my brother had trouble getting out of the passengers seat. The driver was in total shock as he stumbled out of the vehicle. We ended up having to leave the car in the ditch due to it not being able to start up for his dad to come and pull it out. The car got towed into the junkyard. The driver ended up being ok and my brother fractured his wrist.
Although there was no serious injury to either of the people in the car, it was a life changing experience for me. I was in shock and could not sleep at all that night. I personally think the best case senecio happened that night due to how fast the car was moving. There was a huge culvert to the right of the crash that likely could have killed them if they hit that. Since this incident, I have always been aware every moment I am behind the wheel. I have been aware of not only my actions behind the wheel, but other people that are behind the wheel while I am in the veichle. This shaped my awareness by realizing something like this can happen at any given moment and I am not just immune to it. I think these types of incidents occur with teenagers and people in their twenties more often than not. I think this because like us, we do not have as many experiences behind the wheel. I think many people who first get there license think they know all about impaired driving and are automatically equipped with every rule there is just because they passed the drivers test. Driving is something that you are supposed to get with practice like anything.
Traffic school courses and drivers education can help change attitudes and behaviors about impaired driving by continuing to explain the dangers of impaired driving. I think personal connections and stories make people care more then a random story about someone having a bad experience with impaired driving. Human behavior is also highly perceived by social norms. Being strongly against impaired driving through traffic school and drivers education can shape students to think that the norm is not to drive while being impaired.
Roles I can personally play in preventing impaired driving are always getting adequate sleep, not abusing any substances before getting behind the wheel, and reducing the amount of distractions while driving. I can also successfully influence my friends and family members that there are other ways around driving impaired even if you feel like you absolutely need to.
Impaired driving is a preventable yet ongoing threat to road safety. Evidence shows that alcohol, drugs, and fatigue seriously weaken judgment and reaction time, putting both drivers and others at risk. While enforcement is important, real progress depends on education, responsible decision-making, and a shift in social attitudes. By understanding the consequences and choosing safer alternatives, individuals can help reduce impaired driving and create safer roads for everyone.
