Every single time I leave the house, my mom always tells me to drive safe. When she says this, I think about why it matters so much to her. When she was my age, she was hit by a drunk driver. That memory has stuck with her, and she has taught me how careful you need to be when you get on the road.  She has taught me that driving safely isn’t just about following rules; it’s about protecting lives.

So, what does “impaired driving” mean to me? To me, it means getting behind the wheel after the ability to drive is reduced or compromised by something, that could be alcohol, drugs, texting, being tired, or any other distraction. Unfortunately, many people limit the reasons for impaired driving, even drivers who have completed driver’s ed or traffic school. Some think it only means drunk driving. The truth is, impairment isn’t just about alcohol, it’s any condition or behavior that makes driving unsafe.

Today, most people become impared because of alcohol, other drugs, or texting and using a phone. Each affects driving and they can all lead to deadly situations. Alcohol slows reaction times, impairs judgment, and slows down your ability to make quick decisions. Drugs can alter perception and make it harder to focus. Texting takes your eyes and attention off the road, often for an amount of time that could cause a deadly situation. Being extra tired can sometimes causing drivers to fall asleep at the wheel. All these impairments make it more likely that a driver will drive at the wrong speed, miss issues in the road, or react too slowly to emergencies, and this can lead to horrible accidents, like the one that my mom was in, and sometimes deadly crashes.

I heard a story that really changed how I think about impaired driving. A student in my school lost a younger sibling to a crash caused by a driver who was texting behind the wheel. The driver wasn’t drunk or on drugs. They were just checking their phone. Hearing about how that family’s life was changed forever made me realize that impairment isn’t just about alcohol or drugs, it’s about anything that takes your concentration from the road. That, and my mom's warning every time I leave, makes me think and influences the choices I make when I’m driving. I don’t text or make a call while I am driving, and I focus instead of getting distracted with friends.

Driver’s education and traffic school courses play a really important part to tech people the horrible things than can happen if people drive wile they are impaired. These classes are effective because they don’t just teach rules, they show videos and tell stories about the real consequences of unsafe driving. By watching these videos, testimonials, and doing the interactive lessons, they make students aware of things they may not have ever considerd. My driver's ed class also taught practical skills like how to plan for a safe ride home, recognizing signs of when others should not drive, and ways to avoid situations that could be dangerous. When students experience simulations or hear stories from victims and survivors, they’re more likely to understand and learn from the message in a way that can change their behavior.

As a pretty new driver, I know that I have a personal responsibility to help prevent impaired driving. First, I can make smart decisions by never driving impaired or distracted. I can also speak up if I’m ever in a situation where a friend is impaired and should not drive. Offering to be a designated driver or helping arrange alternative rides can aviod accidents and save lives. Beyond that, sharing what I’ve learned in driver’s ed with friends and younger students can spread awareness. Sometimes, just talking about the dangers and how impairments affect driving can teach others something they did not consider.

What I have learned has given me tools not only to protect myself but to influence others. When we see impaired driving as a safety concern for each car getting the road, we create a safer culture. Everyone has a part to they can play.  Every driver needs to make responsible choices.  Our families want us to be safe and come home safe.  That is why my mom yells for me to be careful every time I leave.  She has taught me that driving safely isn’t just about avoiding tickets or accidents, it’s about making decisiosn that keep everyone safe and protected.
