Impaired driving isn't just about drinking and driving, it's about anything that takes your focus off the road and your responsibility to others. Whether it's alcohol, drugs, being tired, or being distracted by their phone. To me, impaired driving means driving without giving the road or people on it your full attention. It's scary how one simple choice, or one second of looking away, can completely change someone's life.

A lot of people misunderstand what impaired driving really means. Many think it only happens when someone is drunk or high. But there are so many other ways a driver can be impaired, by emotions, exhaustion, or even confidence. Some drivers believe they're "good enough" to text and drive or that being tired isn't a big deal. They don't realize how fast a car can move and how quickly things can go wrong. That overconfidence makes impaired driving even more dangerous because it often starts with people who never thought they's make that mistake.

The most common types of impairments I see today are texting, fatigue, alcohol, and drugs. Texting and driving especially stand out because it's something so many people do without thinking. You look down for a few seconds to answer a message, and in that short moment, your car can travel the length of a football field. Fatigue is another silent danger. A tired driver might not even notice they're drifting or slowing down their reactions. Then there's alcohol and drugs, which completely change how someone judges distance, speed, and time. Each of these things affects the brain in different ways, but the result is the same:unsafe driving and preventable accidents.

One day, me and my mother was in the car, she was driving me to school. Suddenly someone called her phone she answer it and put it on speaker. But then the person on the phone was asking her to look at her messages and she did. She looked down for a few seconds, and drifted into the sidewalk and collided with a car. I still remember sitting in the car afterward, shaking, realizing how close we came to something worse. that experience showed me that impaired driving isn't just dangerous, it's personal. It affects families, not drivers. It' s not about being a "bad person"; it's about making a split second choice that could change lives forever. This was such a tragic moment for me and my mother but we made it out unscathed. My mom didn't mean to hurt anyone, it was just a moment of distraction. But that one second changed everything.

Ever since that happened to me, I made a promise to myself: no phones while driving. I turn on " Do Not Disturb" every time I start the car. I also remind my friends not to text me while they're driving, and if I'm in the passenger seat, I'll take care of directions or messages for them. It's something small, but it could save a life, maybe even mine.

I really believe driver's education and traffic school can help prevent tragedies like that. These programs don't just teach the rules of the road; they remind us why those rules matter. The best classes use real stories and examples to show what can happens when someone makes a careless decision. Those lessons stick with you because they're emotional and real. They make you realize that driving isn't just about getting somewhere, it's about protecting yourself and everyone around you.

If more drivers took time to refresh what they learned in driver's ed, I think we'd see fewer crashes cause by distraction or impairments. Education build awareness, and awareness saves lives. When people truly understand how alcohol, drugs, or distractions affect their body and reaction time. they think twice before picking up the keys.

Impaired driving isn't just a mistake, it's a choice that can have a lifelong consequences. Every person who chooses to drive alert and sober is choosing to protect someone's life, and even someone they'll never meet. It's a responsibility that comes with the privilege of driving.

The truth is, one second can change everything. One second of distraction, one wrong decision, one moment of looking away, that's all it takes. I want to be part of a generation that takes driving seriously, that values life enough to put safety first. Because no text, no drink, and no rush is worth someone's life.  My experience changed me forever, and if sharing it can make even one person put their phone down while driving then something good comes out of that scary moment. I'll keep sharing that message, because no text or notification is worth the pain of almost losing someone you love or taking another's life.
