Avoiding the consumption of substances is the first and most important practice to prevent impaired driving. Even though I do not consume any kind of illicit substances, it is common for others who are my age to do so. Each person has a different point of view on this kind of responsibility; some may not think much of it, while others are already aware of how important it is to take care of oneself. Something that is very important to me is the people I choose to become friends with. Many more people should be aware of how the friends they choose can play a significant role in their safety while driving. Making sure I get into a car with someone I know is responsible and can trust is one way to prevent an accident. Consuming illicit substances is not only dangerous on the road, but also in our daily lives because it can demonstrate someone’s maturity based on their choices. It is important to avoid risking your life in someone’s car because they lack basic responsibilities that, as a driver, they must have.
If the situation is unavoidable and the designated driver is in no condition to drive, allowing them to do so is the worst choice and should not even be considered. Finding other ways to reach your destination, even if it costs money, will be the best choice and won’t cost lives. Maybe getting an Uber doesn’t sound scarier than death from a car crash. Someone who is sober and has a license is also a good option. Calling a parent, relative, or even a friend will also be a much better choice. Having someone who is responsible and caring is the best company anyone could ask for. That person will make crucial choices that can impact others’ lives, including their own, even in the worst situations. Becoming that person is also a choice.
Anyone who cares for others as much as they care for themselves can lead by example, demonstrating the value of trust and responsibility. That person offers a true and great friendship. Why wouldn’t anyone want a genuine friendship? A lot of teenagers probably feel lonely and think that there isn’t anyone who will care as much for them, while there are some people who won’t, it is of great importance to learn how to care about ourselves before letting those who won’t return the same amount of care, create damage, and cause tragic consequences in our lives. Demonstrating your care is not embarrassing; if others think that you’re overreacting or dramatic, then they are not your friends. A true friend will appreciate that you care and won’t make you feel ashamed for speaking up on something that can endanger your life.
There are many ways to avoid impaired driving; making the right choices is what will keep everyone safe on the road. Being responsible enough to avoid substances is the first choice, and refusing to operate a vehicle while under the influence is just as important. Surrounding yourself with people who care about your well-being and being brave enough to teach others about the consequences of reckless choices are among the best ways to prevent impaired driving. Ultimately, preventing impaired driving is a shared responsibility that requires everyone to look out for one another. Every decision we make, whether it is choosing not to drive after drinking, making sure friends do not get behind the wheel impaired, or having the courage to speak up, can make a life-saving difference. By encouraging open conversations, supporting responsible choices, and fostering a space where safety is prioritized, we can ensure our communities remain safe for everyone. One responsible choice is enough to make a difference and save countless lives.
