Driving is one of the biggest milestones in a teenager's life. It shows independence, freedom, and trust, but with that freedom comes a huge responsibility. Getting behind the wheel means you must stay focused, make smart decisions, and protect yourself and others on the road. Drivers' education is important because it teaches new drivers the rules of the road, safe driving techniques, and how to handle different situations. I've realized that Driver's education isn't just a class you take for fun, but instead it teaches us the dangers you can face on the road and how to overall become a safe driver. I believe that in order to make our roads safer we must make stronger laws and more training before getting your license.
I think impaired driving is sometimes misunderstood, even by people who have completed drivers' education, because of how common risky behaviors have become. In today's world, we're surrounded by so many distractions such as notifications popping up, your phone buzzing, etc. Being distracted for even 5 seconds can lead to an accident. Looking at your phone really quickly can lead to an accident, that's why it's so important to have your full attention on the road. Many people underestimate how quickly distractions can become an impairment. To me, impaired driving isn't just because of alcohol or drugs, but instead it can be anything that messes with your focus and coordination. In my opinion, people often just assume "Impaired" has to do with illegal substances, not realizing that scrolling through music, texting, or even being emotionally really upset can be just as dangerous. In my opinion, this is a result of being overconfident. What I mean by that is having an exaggerated belief in your abilities behind the wheel. Taking unnecessary risks, ignoring potential dangers, making poor decisions, etc. are all examples of being overconfident behind the wheel. People think they can drive and text at the same time, but it ends in an accident. That is impaired driving. You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention.
Impaired driving is a topic that hits close to home for me because I’ve seen firsthand how casually some people treat it. I think that what really gets to me is when I see my friends on their phones while they’re behind the wheel. Sometimes they're texting, scrolling through social media, taking selfies, looking at themselves in the mirror, just acting like it's no big deal. Sometimes I wish I knew what goes on in people's heads. It’s like they think they're somehow exempt from the laws of physics or that they're good at multitasking and that they can handle anything. That’s another result of being overconfident. What’s crazy is that I’m never taken seriously when I approach them about it. They just brush it off like it's nothing. Even the best driver in the world can’t react in time if they're not paying attention. I wish there was just a way to make them understand how dangerous it is before something terrible really does happen. Maybe if they saw the impact of impaired driving firsthand, then they'd think twice before picking up their phones behind the wheel.
As someone who is deeply concerned about the impact of impaired driving. I believe I can play a crucial role in preventing it through education and awareness. I can start by discussing with my friends and family all the risks they could take by just picking up their phone for just a second. When taking Drivers Ed, I think instructors should talk about real-life cases where impaired driving occurred. Also, they could talk about how impairments affect reaction time, judgement, and coordination. Courses that include stories of real accidents, or testimonies from victims' families will show students that this is serious and looking away from the road for a second can spare someone's life. This topic of impaired driving cannot just be tossed to the side and ignored. Thousands of people die every year due to impaired driving and it's time to change that. My goal is to spread awareness and ensure that we will see changes and to make sure everyone is committed to making safe choices behind the wheel.
In conclusion, prioritizing driver safety and responsible behavior behind the wheel is so important. From maintaining focus and awareness to avoiding distractions and impairments, every aspect of safe driving contributes to preventing accidents and saving lives. Being a driver comes with the responsibility of watching out for others. By being smart, aware, and cautious, we can help to prevent some of those deaths that come from impaired driving. We can start to make steps to improve the quality of driving and ensure that people are responsible enough to the best of our ability.
