The dangers of driving

Driving is a luxury some may say otherwise but it is not everyone can have a license. Whether it's for medical reasons, personal choice or another reason not everyone gets to drive. When I think of driving, I think of road trips I have not gone on many but the few I have gone on were fun. But not safely the first one I went on was with my dad and he fell asleep behind the wheel which scared me. What I didn’t know was that the car can drive itself. had I known this before I would have been less worried, not everyone has a nice ending like this story. when I think of the word impaired, I think unable to do basic tasks, commonly when someone is impaired, they are on drugs or have been drinking alcohol causing their bodies to not function normally.  When I think of impaired driving I think did anyone get hurt, by someone choosing to drive even though they are impaired is not ok. often times people do not tell the other people in the car as well so they are not always able to make the choice of this person who has been drinking, I will find another way home. I think that some people do it anyways because no one else can drive or because they are the only ones in the car.
impaired driving in this context would mean anything that obstructs you’re driving which not everyone thinks about they may only think of drugs or alcohol. Yes, drugs and alcohol are considered forms of impairment but also food, non-alcoholic drinks and sometimes headlights are also forms of impairment.
People may think that is wrong, but it is not expressed when you learn how to drive what other types of impairment are. A way to fix or correct this would be to explain more types of impairment not just ones that physically affect you. For example, if you are driving while doing your makeup and accidentally hit another car you could be charged with impairment since you had one or more hands off the wheel making it unsafe to drive. If we use more examples that apply to different types of people, then we can get more people to better understand what it actually means to be impaired and not just the board term. I think a very common way of impairment now would be phones, there’s holders, people who have to use their phones to take others places and they are addicting. I’m sure a big concern when having anyone drive is having them check their phones, not only are they putting themselves in danger but also the people in the car.
In Iowa the rule with phones is that they have to be hands free so the driver is not distracted, now I am not sure how well people in my state follow this, but I think that it is ok to use your phone only before and after driving so you and passengers can be safe. The only reason a phone should be used outside of emergency is for a GPS but even so you can tell the phone an address and it will pull it up for you instead of you having to do it manually. Now I think a way to make this rule better would be to make sure every car has a phone holder to make sure that it is hands-free and so the drivers will be less likely to take their eyes off the road. Another possible solution could be providing affordable classes for people to go over what impaired driving can look like and give them a quiz or something to prove that they know what it means. If this were to happen it would be required to get your license, so you know before driving what it means and the impact of not following the law.  It could also be apart of the tests that you have to take before getting your license that is mandatory by the DOT. Making it another module would make sure people are doing it and know what it means in different examples. It seems that people remember visuals more than just text so when the module is made people will remember it by adding videos on it like other modules on the test.
Ways that this would help would be lowering the death rates of impaired driving as a whole not just by teens. The death rate in the U.S is 30% of deaths now some may say that this is low, but 237 billon is the average that people drive so 30% is a lot. Now by educating people we can lower those rates to 25 to 20 and hopefully take slow steps to make sure that the number becomes lower. Which leads to me to how I can make an impact by donating to non-profits that their main focus is helping educate people about driving and what dangers there are, telling others I know good and bad driving habits and making sure I myself know and have good driving habits to keep me and others safe. These are the dangers of driving and a few solutions to help keep people safe.
