Drivers Education provides an environment where new drivers can get practice driving, real up to date information, tips on how to make safe decisions, hazard recognition, and explain the consequences of distracted driving and impaired driving. Drivers Education not only provides a safe and controlled environment for new drivers to become more confident in their abilities to drive, but also provides someone who is well informed to help them through it. When first starting out, new drivers are often anxious or nervous while behind the wheel. While a parent can offer good support and knowledge, it is important that the information a new driver is getting is up to date. Also, when people have been driving for quite some time, vital information can be lost or forgotten. Uninformed or poorly informed drivers are more likely to make bad decisions and put others and themself in danger. Several people at my high school didn’t wait until they had their licence for six months before they took their friends out for a drive. That puts everyone in the car in a risky situation. Friends are distracting, loud, and might mess around in the car while you are driving, leading to someone getting hurt or killed. Any passengers that are in the car become the driver’s responsibility. Immature drivers can put people in danger simply because they don’t have the proper education.. In 2023, just over 3000 teens, ages 13-19, died in motor vehicle accidents. Having a teacher in the car with a new driver will help them to recognize and react to hazards, or potential hazards, in real time. Some steps that could help reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving are making
drivers ed more accessible to families, or offering a class parents could attend to help inform their children. Drivers ed is an expensive option, but it is a great option. Having taken drivers ed myself, I found it very helpful and made my confidence in my own driving increase significantly. My family was fortunate enough to be able to afford driver's ed as an option, but that's not the case with all families. Having some sort of financial aid that's directed towards drivers ed will help provide lower income families more opportunities for their kids to have access to those resources. Something that allows student drivers to have more learning environments will help them become safer on the road. Thankfully I have never been in an accident, but I was one car away from being in one. My dad, my siblings, my boyfriend, and I were on our way to my Uncle’s wedding reception. There was a truck with a big camping trailer behind it. As we were driving we came up on a road that had a stop sign for oncoming traffic, and we had the right of way. The elderly man that was driving didn’t see the stop sign and crashed straight into the truck in front of us, towards the back where the trailer was hooked up to the truck. It was as if I was watching this unfold in slow motion but it was over so quickly. They skidded across the road into what was thankfully a ditch. Camper parts were everywhere; foam, plastic, belongings from inside, and one of their dogs got out of the truck and ran away into some trees. The front of the car the older man was driving was crunched in, fluids were all over the road, as well as some glass. No one seemed to be hurt. There were two people in each car. Right behind the crash was a church full of people. People heard the ruckus and came flooding out to help. My dad pulled over and got out to see what he could help with. Someone had already called 911, and with the influx of people from the church he made the decision we could leave. We were merely feet from having our lives changed permanently. It could have gone a lot worse, but thankfully there were so many people there to help. On our way back we saw that they had gotten it almost all the way cleaned up. Having informed drivers who know what they are doing and who drive safely, diligently, and aware of their surroundings make the road a safer place for everyone. That's because driving accidents can be avoided and lowered by teaching new drivers how to drive safely and carefully, by making the decisions that are safest for them and others.
Driver's education does this job well.
