There are over six million car accidents each year in the United States, resulting in roughly 45,000 deaths. Although driving is one of the least safe modes of transportation, it remains the most common way for people to travel. Practicing safe driving habits is essential, as it can help prevent accidents and save lives around the world. 
Irresponsible driving can mean many different things to different people, but to me it means driving while knowing you could put other lives in danger. My sister and I were involved in a car accident because she believed her car was faster than another driver’s. That experience traumatized me and made me afraid to learn how to drive. I feared that I, too, would get into a crash. Eventually, my parents encouraged me to learn, but I still carried anxiety. When I finally got my own car, I was excited but nervous about being on the road alone. Less than a year later, another student backed into my car without realizing I was behind him. I was devastated and terrified as he continued to accelerate into my vehicle. As I cried to my father and the police officer, I thought it might be the last time I saw my car. Although I was grateful to be uninjured, I was still afraid to get behind the wheel again. 
Driving under the influence is one of the most dangerous and irresponsible choices a person can make behind the wheel. When someone is impaired, their judgment becomes warped, their reaction time slows, and their motor skills are severely compromised, putting everyone on the road at risk. Each year, approximately 13,000 deaths occur as a result of drunk or drug-impaired driving, which means thousands of lives are lost because of decisions that could have been prevented. The danger does not affect just the impaired driver; it endangers passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, and families who may never fully recover from the loss or trauma caused by such accidents. Practicing responsible decision-making, such as choosing a designated driver or using a ride service, can prevent these tragedies and save countless lives.
Creating safer roads requires effort not only from individual drivers but also from communities, schools, and lawmakers who all play a role in shaping driving behavior. Education programs that teach young drivers about the dangers of speeding, distractions, and impaired driving can make a lasting impact on how they approach the responsibility of being behind the wheel. Schools can incorporate real stories, simulations, and hands-on lessons that help students understand the consequences of careless decisions. Law enforcement and state agencies can also contribute by consistently enforcing traffic laws and promoting public awareness campaigns that remind drivers to stay alert and cautious. Even simple actions, such as encouraging friends to put their phones away or refusing to ride with someone who is impaired, can make a difference. When everyone works together, the roads become safer not just for drivers, but for passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians as well. Safe driving is truly a shared responsibility.

Driving is a privilege, not a right, and it requires consistent awareness, good judgment, and respect for traffic laws. By requiring drivers to demonstrate safe driving habits when they apply for or renew their licenses, states can help reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities caused by negligence or recklessness. This approach would encourage drivers to stay educated about road safety, remain accountable for their actions, and take driving seriously throughout their lives. Ultimately, prioritizing safe driving in the licensing process protects everyone on the road and promotes a safer, more responsible driving culture.

Every accident, injury, or life lost serves as a reminder of how powerful and dangerous a vehicle can be when it is not operated responsibly. My own experiences, along with the countless tragedies caused by impaired or reckless drivers, show how important it is to take driving seriously at all times.
