Dear DMVU,

Impaired driving to me means getting behind the wheel when you are unable to safely operate a vehicle. It's more than drinking and driving. It is a risk that can impact not only the driver but passengers, civilians, and other drivers on the road. Knowing the full affect impaired driving can cause is crucial to prevent accidents. Impairment comes from fatigue, use of alcohol and drugs, or distractions like texting. I feel as though it is misunderstood. Many people do not realize how quickly their focus, judgement, and reflexes can be affected by. Many experienced drivers underestimate the dangers and think that a short drive is harmless, when in reality, it can possibly lead to a life-changing consequences.

With drivers today, alcohol and texting are the most common forms of impairment. Fatigue is also a major issue, especially for overworked and young drivers. These forms of impairment can slow reaction times, blur one's judgement, and even make it harder to respond during unexpected situations which lead to dangerous outcomes on the road. The combination of being tired while texting or even drinking a small amount of alcohol can drastically increase the risk of causing an accident. For instance, I remember hearing about a close friend's family member who got in an accident after texting and driving. This story has stuck with me because it was easily preventable and made me aware of how small distractions can have serious consequences. It makes me reflect on how quickly a decision can change lives and the importance of being on point whenever driving.

Another reason impaired driving is such a big problem is that too many people feel overconfident in their abilities. They may think that they have driven tired before and made it home safely or that they can send a quick text without issues. This mindset provides a false sense of control and allows drivers to believe they can multitask and manage being impaired while driving. What individuals fail to realize that driving requires full concentration, and that every second is crucial. Even the slightest error in attention can lead to a disaster. To be able to change this mindset, it involves educating yourself and also takes self-awareness to admit that no one is perfect behind the wheel. Overconfidence makes people forget that every trip on the road deserves full attention. Driving safe is not about luck but rather about being aware and having respect for others' lives.

The false sense of confidence is especially dangerous because the risks are underestimated until a tragedy takes place. Studies from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that DUI related crashes were more than 13,000 in 2022 alone. Texting and driving is just as deadly by diverting attention away from the road. Research also shows that fatigue impairs reaction time and awareness similar to the same level as alcohol. Being awake for more than 18 hours can effect reaction time equally as much as someone who is drunk, yet many drivers do not notice the risk. These studies prove that impaired driving is not about only careless decisions but about everyday habits that make drivers think they are in control when in reality they are not. Recognizing how serious these situations can get, they help me understand what type of responsibility is needed as a driver.

Driver's education and traffic school courses play a major role in preventing impaired driving. They provide real life examples and strategies that show how the impact of unsafe driving can effect individuals and families. The programs work because they can combine knowledge with experience which help students understand both the risks and responsibilities that come with driving. By simulating real world scenarios, the programs influence how important it is to make responsible decisions and how severe the consequences will be. Hearing stories from people also creates empathy and an emotional connection that can change how people think about their actions. It may make lessons more personal than just an instruction.

Personally, I take driving very seriously. I make it normal to never drive impaired and to speak up when I notice friends or family members getting behind the wheel under the influence. By sharing what I have learned and by leading by example, I hope to influence other drivers to make safe choices because the choice to drive responsibly can be the difference between life and loss. Being aware and gaining knowledge are powerful tools that can be applied to save lives. I believe that responsible driving is a shared responsibility. Each individual who chooses to act careful while driving contributes to safer roads and a stronger community. Being committed to preventing impaired driving is not about following rules but about protecting lives and promoting accountability and a sense of consideration.
