I think driving is an activity we participate in every day and yet one of the most dangerous things we can be doing if we are not paying attention. I've seen firsthand the speed at which things can go wrong and I believe this has helped me understand how valuable a form of education, such as driver education, is. My experiences with both of my brothers have demonstrated to me how much responsibility is involved with driving a vehicle, and how a moment of careless behavior can result in long-lasting effects.
At one point, I was riding in a car with my older brother, who was using his cell phone while operating a vehicle. He was slightly veering into the different lanes, and I remembered feeling anxious and simply taking hold of my phone due to my feeling of not feeling safe I was experiencing 'fight or flight'  in high alert. I didn't know what to say since, as a younger sibling, you usually aren't taken seriously when you try to express your concerns, and I was trying to make light of the situation, hoping he would take it seriously and that we would arrive safely at our destination. Fortunately, there were very few vehicles on the road that day, however that experience will forever stay with me and allowed me to understand how easily distractions, no matter how brief they may seem (in this case, seconds) can change a typical drive into an unsafe one. The fear and anxiety I experienced weren't solely for my safety, they were for the realization that anyone in that vehicle or even another vehicle on the road could have been injured.
Even worse than that experience was when my other brother was in a car accident. The accident was so severe that he was ejected from the vehicle and suffered shattered hips along with broken legs, and bruising to his face. You could hardly recognize him. Although he survived, he is unable to feel anything in his left foot and has had to undergo extensive physical therapy to regain as much independence as possible. Unfortunately, his boss, who was in the vehicle with him, did not survive. Speaking with my brother after the incident, he expressed how difficult it was for him to deal with the aftermath of the wreck, losing someone he cared for and watching them go before his eyes, being severely injured himself, and having to rely on others for everyday tasks. As his sister, I was saddened by the struggles he faced and the limitations placed upon him. This experience has given me a new appreciation for how fragile life is and how quickly things can change due to a single careless action or a moment of distraction while operating a vehicle.
Driving is a privilege, not something to take lightly. It's an opportunity to be accountable for your own safety and the safety of those around you. Driver education can help lighten and prepare people to prevent the likelihood of such tragedies from occurring. While education involves learning traffic laws, it goes beyond that and includes learning how to identify potential dangers, how to respond during emergency situations, and most importantly, understanding that driving safely is a responsibility, not a privilege.
Education provides the opportunity to teach students how to think ahead, how to react quickly to potential threats, and ultimately, how to protect themselves and others on the road. The sooner students learn these skills, the better prepared they will be as future drivers. And I truly believe that every student should have some form of comprehensive instruction prior to receiving a license to operate a vehicle.
While there are many ways to decrease fatalities on the road, there are simple things that can be done to make a significant impact. Drivers need to maintain their focus at all times and refrain from distractions such as using cell phones, obeying traffic laws, and consistently using their seat belts. Family members and friends can also support safe driving practices by holding each other accountable and speaking up if they see someone driving recklessly. These small actions can literally be the difference between life and death. Since I personally experienced the results of reckless driving first hand, I know the power of small acts of kindness to save lives.
I would like to become a safer driver not only for my own sake, but for the sake of every individual I encounter on the road. I want to focus on driving and avoid distractions, and I want to ensure that I am following the same traffic laws that apply to every other driver. I also intend to promote the value of safe driving among my peers and friends through sharing my personal experience and encouraging others to take driving seriously. I want people to realize that accidents do not simply occur on a statistical basis. They are real events that directly affect individuals' lives. I want to be a part of the effort to reduce the occurrence of these events.
My experiences have profoundly impacted me. They have demonstrated that driving is more than simply traveling from point A to point B. Each and every decision made by a driver affects the people surrounding them, and being a responsible driver is about more than having the necessary skills; it is about showing concern for others, demonstrating awareness of your surroundings, and respecting the value of life. Driver education can contribute significantly to preventing injuries and fatalities on our nation's roads, and I hope that by telling my story, I can motivate others to assume responsibility while operating a vehicle. Simply stated, the act of sitting in the driver's seat is not merely about operating a machine; it is about making decisions that result in the preservation of human life and acknowledging the consequences of the choices we make. I wish to honor the memory of my brother, his employer, and every individual whose life was affected by a motor vehicle accident, by working towards creating safer streets throughout our country. By inspiring just one person to put their phone away, slow down, and pay closer attention to their surroundings I will have played a role in preventing a potentially tragic event.
