Course Details

1

Attendance for the full course is mandatory

Events may arise from time to time which are not within the control of the student yet result in a class absence. For those occasions, it is highly encouraged for the student to communicate such absences with the instructor. We will make every effort to schedule time for make-up within a reasonable timeframe. If more than half of the class is missed, the student will forfeit tuition and will have to register and pay for another class.

Classroom instruction will include reading in Drive Right 11th edition, N.C. Driver’s Handbook, and videos about various aspects of vehicle safety. You are expected to pass Checkpoints (quizzes) to ensure you have a good understanding of the material. Please let us know if you have a specific learning challenge so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

Our way of driving is safe and responsible so you will need to take this course seriously and be ready to cover lots of material.

Please look for an invite via email one week before the class start date with log-in instructions for the virtual classroom. Please review the following documents needed before the start of class:

  • HDS2.0 Contract – If you are under the age of 18, please have your parent/guardian complete and sign the contract before the start of class. If you have already completed an online form, you may disregard this step.

  • Birth Certificate – We require a copy of the student’s birth certificate for our records. The birth certificate must be received before the start of class.

Preparing for a Virtual Classroom Session

The following tips will help you prepare for a virtual classroom session:

  • Test all technology, including the web cam, internet and Wi-Fi connection, audio (headset, microphone, and/or speakers), and (if applicable) screen sharing before the meeting.

  • Log into the meeting a few minutes early so that any technical issues can be addressed and resolved.

  • Cameras are mandatory.

  • Be mindful of and check your background and lighting.

    • Ensure that there is nothing personal, potentially embarrassing or offensive in the video background. Use of a virtual background (if permitted) can help masquerade unsightly backgrounds.

    • Check the lighting on the video. Avoid sitting with your back against a window, as well as too little or too much direct light.

  • Position your camera to show your face, avoid directing it too high or too low.

  • Mute your audio if you are not speaking and be mindful of background noise when you unmute to speak. Excessive background noise is distracting and disruptive to the class. Do not type while your microphone is unmuted, as it is loud and distracting. Look at the camera when you are speaking.

3

Tips for Success

  • Stay seated and present during the virtual class. Pay attention and participate.

  • Be ready for interaction. As with the physical classroom, be prepared to discuss course material and assignments, interact with your instructor and classmates, and ask questions.

  • Do not interrupt other people when they are speaking or attempt to speak over them.

  • Turn off all notifications and ensure your cell phone is turned off or on silent.

  • Avoid multi-tasking during the class session. Do not work on other tasks, such as checking your Email, texting, gaming or working on other classwork. Give the class your full attention and focus.

  • By attending a virtual class session, you agree to adhere to the guidelines established above. The goal of these guidelines is to create the most supportive, inclusive, and productive learning environment possible for everyone.

4

What to expect after the course is completed

Once you complete the course you’re elegible to receive a Certificate of Completion and you should find a driving school locally to complete the six hours of driving time requirement.

Once you receive the certificate, you need to take the certificate to your school administrator to obtain a Driver’s Eligibility Certificate. The Driver’s Eligibility Certificate confirms that you are in good standing as far as grades and behavior. This is a requirement through the Graduated Driver’s Licensing program in North Carolina for teen drivers. If you ares home schooled or in a private school, you can access the N.C. DOA website for instructions on how to obtain a Driver’s Eligibility Certificate.

Once you have both the Certificate of Completion from HDS 2.0 and the Driver’s Eligibility Certificate from your school, you will take both certificates to N.C. DMV to obtain your Learner’s Permit.
